Quick Berry Buying Tips

Standing in the supermarket staring at rows of berry punnets, wondering which ones will still be perfect tomorrow? We’ve all been there. Here are our tried-and-tested tips for picking brilliant berries every single time.

Check the Bottom First

Before you even look at the berries themselves, flip that punnet over and check the bottom.

What you’re looking for: A clean, dry pad with no staining, juice marks, or stuck berries.

Why it matters: When berries get crushed or start breaking down, they release juice that collects at the bottom. This moisture creates the perfect environment for mould to spread rapidly through the punnet. Even if the top layer looks gorgeous, juice stains may mean trouble underneath.

If you see dark stains, any moisture, or berries stuck to the pad, grab a different punnet.

The Tilt Test

Fresh berries can be delicate, so gentle care is the best approach to freshness testing.

The approach: Gently tilt the container instead.

What you want: Berries that move freely and tumble easily, not sticking together or to the container.

Why it works: Fresh, firm berries roll around independently. If they’re clumped together or barely moving, it usually means moisture has built up from berries starting to break down, so looking for a fresher punnet is the way to go.

What to Look for in Each Berry

Strawberries

  • Brilliant red colour all over
  • Even, rich sheen
  • Bright green leaves
  • Should smell sweet and fragrant

Look for: Berries that are red all over. If you can still see some white patches near the top, they may not be at their peak ripeness. On the other side of the scale, soft spots can indicate that they’re not as fresh as they could be!

Raspberries

  • Plump and brightly coloured
  • Soft, hazy gloss rather than wet shine
  • Free from dents or mushiness

Worth knowing: Those tiny hairs on raspberries (called ‘styles’) are completely natural and don’t affect taste or ripeness.

Blueberries

  • Deep blue colour with that hazy-white coating (called bloom—it’s a good thing!)
  • Dry and plump
  • Free from wrinkles or soft spots

The bloom: That hazy white coating is a natural protective layer that helps keep them fresh. More bloom = better!

Blackberries

  • Deep, even colour (ranging from dark purple to black)
  • Plump and well-formed
  • Smooth sheen (not overly wet-looking)

Once You Get Them Home

Proper storage makes all the difference. For detailed guidance, check out our complete guides to storing strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries.

Quick recap:

  • Don’t wash until you’re ready to eat them
  • Keep them cold in the fridge
  • Don’t stack things on top
  • Use them quickly for best flavour

The Bottom Line

An extra 10 seconds in the supermarket to check your berries can help you pick the best ones to take home. If they’re bright red all over with a sweet scent that makes it hard not to eat them on the spot, and move freely inside their container, you’ve found the perfect punnet!
