Breakfast in bed , playing in the park, long lunches with friends, or a cool dip in the pool . Whatever springs to mind when you think of feel-good summer fun, be sure to add blueberries to the list.
We gently nurture our blueberries throughout the growing season. They are hand-picked and carefully packed so that they reach the supermarket shelves in premium condition, just for you.
Naturally sweet and oh-so flavoursome, we pride ourselves on not adding any artificial colours or flavours to our Driscoll’s Blueberries. Our berries are grown without the use of irradiation, using specialised pest management to minimise the use of pesticides, and with no genetic modification.
When selecting your blueberries in-store, look for dry, plump berries that are free from bruises or dents. Fresh blueberries have a hazy white coating called ‘bloom’, which works like sunscreen to protect the berries from the sun’s rays. Avoid berries that appear shrivelled, or lack bloom.
Blueberries are best stored in the fridge, kept dry and in their original punnet, and they should keep for 5-7 days. They can be frozen, but don’t wash them before freezing, as their skins may toughen. Blueberries can bruise easily, so it’s best to handle them gently.
Blueberries should only be rinsed right before eating, otherwise they may go mouldy or soft. While blueberries are delightful on their own, you can add them to a variety of sweet and savoury recipes to enjoy them even more.
It’s time to get creative and find new, flavoursome ways to bring blueberries into your kitchen!
Share the joyNative to North America, blueberries have been around for over 13,000 years. The blueberry species is part of the Vaccinium genus, which includes over 450 shrubs, like cranberries and huckleberries. Talk about versatility! Blueberries were first cultivated for consumption at the start of the 20th century in North America. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the colourful berry made its way to Australia to be grown commercially here. Thanks to new varieties of blueberries being released all the time, we have a consistent supply of blueberries throughout the year, whatever the weather.
