Wondering when is the best time to purchase blueberries? We explain when blueberry season is and what conditions berries grow best in.
Blueberries are delightful when cooked into fluffy pancakes, enjoyed in a home cooked pie or simply perfect on their own! There’s no shortage of reasons why blueberries are great for you! From being great for your skin to helping you add more fibre to your diet, it’s easy to see why they are such a favourite.
However, similar to other berries, blueberries can fluctuate in availability due to surges in demand, the time of year and other changing factors. We answer the common questions we receive about blueberry season, the different varieties and where they grow best.
The blueberry season in Australia is from July to April. However, as they are grown in a wide range of different weather regions across the country and New Zealand – you can enjoy blueberries year round!
Blueberries love a position with full-sun and moist well-drained soil. Ideally, the soil should have an acidic pH level between 4.0 to 5.0. The best-suited climate for blueberries really depends on which variety you choose. Northern Highbush Blueberry varieties require cold winters so they are best grown in Victoria and Tasmania, while the Southern Highbush or Evergreen production systems can handle the more tropical climates of New South Wales and lower Queensland.
A large portion of our blueberry growing occurs around Coffs Harbour in New South Wales. Due to the favourable weather there, we are able to grow and harvest our blueberries throughout the year.
At Driscoll’s, we have different varieties of blueberries which can be grown from as far south as Tasmania to as far north as the outskirts of Cairns in Tolga, Queensland. New blueberry varieties are being developed to be grown in various climates while still maintaining Driscoll’s values of producing delicious and flavourful berries which are not genetically modified.
