6 Ways to Start the Week Out Right in Autumn

If getting out of bed on darker mornings isn’t quite as easy as it is in summer, you’re not alone! The change in seasons can affect your bodily rhythms; you may feel more tired than usual, or find summoning the courage to step out from under a cozy doona on a Monday morning a bit more difficult. And if your Monday’s hard, then how are you going to kick your exercise and wellbeing goals for the rest of the week?

The good news? There are some simple things you can do to embrace autumn and its darker mornings, and start every autumn week on the right foot.

1. Plan an Awesome Week Every Sunday

Sunday is, for most people, a wonderful day of rest and relaxation spent with family and friends. But if you can give yourself just half an hour to plan your week ahead, you’ll allow yourself a much better chance of hitting the ground running come Monday. Write a to-do list, check your calendar, and set plans to get outside and do something for you each morning before work. Whether it’s a workout, coffee, walk, or just sitting outside with a good book, look after yourself! Then, highlight the activities you’re really looking forward to, so you stay focused on the fun stuff.

While you’re in planning mode, think ahead about your meals and snacks for the week too. Having a punnet of fresh Driscoll’s berries washed and ready to go in the fridge means healthy snacking becomes the easy choice, even on the most hectic of mornings.

2. Sleep, Sleep, Sleep

You know the drill. Adults need around 7 to 8 hours of solid sleep every night to give their minds and bodies a chance to restore themselves. Yet over a third of Australian adults aren’t catching enough ZZZs. And without good sleep behind you, your chances of waking up raring to go on a Monday morning are pretty slim. So this week, make sleep a priority. Your body will thank you for it.

3. Introduce Artificial Light

As the mornings grow darker, don’t let that get in the way of your wellbeing routine. You can convince your body that it’s time to get up and get moving simply by flicking on a light. When you’re up, grab a head torch and hit the streets for a morning run or brisk walk, and you may be rewarded with the added bonus of a beautiful autumn sunrise.

If getting out of bed in the dark is a real challenge, consider investing in a sunrise alarm clock; these mini-lamps glow brighter as your wake-up time approaches, mimicking the dawn that makes it that bit easier to wake up to.

4. Fuel Up With Warmer Foods

One of the perks of cooler mornings is the chance to change up your breakfast. Goodbye cereal, hello creamy porridge. Top a warm bowl with a handful of fresh Driscoll’s strawberries or blueberries for a burst of colour and natural sweetness that makes the whole thing feel like a treat. It’s a small thing, but starting the day with something nourishing and delicious can do wonders for your mood and your motivation.

Heading into work? Pack a punnet of raspberries or blackberries in your bag for a mid-afternoon snack that keeps you going without the 3pm sugar crash.

5. Give Your Body a Boost Before Flu Season Hits

Autumn is beautiful, but it also marks the beginning of cold and flu season. Getting on the front foot with your health now is a lot easier than playing catch-up later. Alongside good sleep, regular movement, and staying hydrated, what you eat makes a real difference when it comes to preparing your body for winter.

Berries are one of nature’s great little powerhouses. Strawberries are loaded with vitamin C (a single cup contains more than an orange), while blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are packed with antioxidants that support a healthy immune system. Adding a daily handful of Driscoll’s berries to your meals or snacks is simple and delicious immune-boosting habits you can build heading into the cooler months.

6. Be Gentle on Yourself

Many of us get to Sunday night and say, “This week, I’ll do more exercise,” or “This week, I won’t reach for that sugary snack each arvo.” It’s like Monday is the unofficial day to reboot. You might power through Monday on sheer willpower, but by Wednesday you may find yourself slipping back into old habits.

That’s completely okay, especially as the seasons change and your body is naturally adjusting to cooler days. Do a mid-week reboot, remind yourself that one slip doesn’t undo a good week, and keep the small, nourishing habits ticking along. Sometimes the simplest things; a good night’s sleep, a morning walk, a bowl of beautiful berries, are the ones that make the biggest difference.
