Sweetest Batch Blueberries

You know that moment when you bite into a blueberry and it actually snaps? We spent years chasing it. Sweetest Batch Blueberries are bigger, crunchier and sweeter than your everyday blueberry, and they are only here for a few short months. Here's what the science says, and how easy it is to work into your day.

Bigger, Bolder, Crunchier Blueberries

A Sweetest Batch blueberry is one you can spot from across the kitchen. Jumbo, plump and dusky blue, with a firm skin that gives a proper snap when you bite in.

Then comes the sweetness. Full, rounded and generous, and it keeps going all the way to the bottom of the punnet. No sad little stragglers at the end. Every berry is the good one.

Ten Years in the Making

Our berry experts love a challenge, and this one kept them busy for a while. Working with Mother Nature and using traditional breeding methods like cross-pollination, they trialled variety after variety, tasting their way through the lot until they landed on a berry with just the right balance of size, crunch and sweetness.

It is slow work. Developing a new variety and getting it ready to reach a supermarket shelf can take up to 10 years. One bite and you will understand why we waited.

Curious what goes into a berry like this? Take a look at how we grow our berries.

Straight From The Punnet

These berries are at their best exactly as nature packed them. The size and the snap are the whole point, so blending or baking them away means missing the very thing you came for. Pop them in the fridge for half an hour before serving and that crunch gets even better.

Want to dress them up? Keep them whole. Scatter a handful over a pavlova, drop a few into a glass of something sparkling, or pile them onto a grazing board beside soft cheese and dark chocolate.

Berries Worth Showing Off

A jumbo blueberry has a way of stealing the show. Through spring, they are the easiest way to lift a spread with almost no effort at all, whether that is a long lunch, a Cup Day gathering or a Sunday with friends who have turned up hungry. Hunting for inspiration? Our Berry Hub is full of it.

Your Blueberry Questions Answered

How should I store Sweetest Batch Blueberries?

Straight into the fridge when you get home, kept dry and still in their punnet. Stored that way they will be at their best for five to seven days, though we suspect they will not last that long. Only rinse them right before you eat them, because moisture is what shortens their shelf life.

Can I freeze them?

You can. Just be sure to avoid washing them first, as that can toughen the skins. Freezing does soften the crunch though, so if the snap is what you are after, keep them fresh and eat them while they are here.

What is the hazy white coating on my blueberries?

That is bloom, and it is a very good sign. Blueberries produce it naturally to shield themselves from the sun, a bit like sunscreen! Bloom means your berries have been handled gently and are lovely and fresh, so it is something to look for rather than something to worry about.

You’ll be able to tell a blueberry is blooming thanks to its smooth or waxy texture.

How are these different from regular Driscoll’s blueberries?

Every Driscoll’s blueberry meets the same quality standards. Sweetest Batch is a variety all its own, bred over the years for extra size, crunch, and sweetness, and it is only with us for a few months each spring.

Catch Them While You Can

Sweetest Batch Blueberries are available at Woolworths and Aldi.

The season is short and sweet. They arrive from mid-September and are gone again by early December, with the very best of the crop through October. So when you spot that punnet, do not walk past it. They will not be back until next spring!
