Growing up on a farm in Tasmania, Blaine was immersed in agriculture from an early age. At seventeen, fresh out of school, he joined Costa at a raspberry farm in Sulphur Creek just as the company was establishing its presence in the region. What began as a farm-hand role quickly became a career, and over fourteen years Blaine took on a variety of positions across multiple sites, helping to shape the growth of berry production in Tasmania and beyond.
Today he leads operations as Regional Manager for Far North Queensland, overseeing four farms on the Atherton Tablelands, about an hour from Cairns. The area’s unique climate allows for harvests during seasons when berries are scarce elsewhere in Australia, making it an important part of the national supply.
Blaine’s days are a mix of problem-solving and time spent walking the crops, checking plant health and production to ensure the best possible yields. He enjoys the challenge of a profession where no two seasons are alike and takes pride in producing food that is both wholesome and high quality.
Equally important to him is the positive effect the farms have on the surrounding community. Costa is one of the largest employers in the region and supports local initiatives ranging from a BMX team and rugby club to community awards and fundraising events. On the sustainability side, the farms use precise water and nutrient monitoring, recycle plastics, and repurpose plant waste as mulch for neighbouring avocado orchards.
When it’s time to enjoy the fruits of his work, Blaine’s choice is simple: a warm blueberry muffin. Looking ahead, he’s excited to see the region continue to develop as a key growing area, with new varieties and improved practices driving even better crops for the future.
