Embracing Autumn in Australia

Making the Most of the Great Outdoors

Autumn in Australia is genuinely stunning. The weather’s in that perfect sweet spot; not too hot, not too cold, just right for getting outside and actually enjoying it. If you’re stuck for ideas about what to do this weekend, the team Driscoll’s you sorted with some of our favourite autumn activities.

Go for a Bushwalk

Choose a morning, or turn it into a proper day-long adventure by heading to an out-of-town forest or national park. Or if you’re short on time, hit up a large inner-city park to give everyone a little taste of nature without the drive.

Bushwalking is brilliant for clearing your head, getting some fresh air, burning energy for little ones, and sneaking in a good dose of exercise. Plus, autumn’s mild weather means you probably won’t be too hot or freezing your toes off, it’s the best time of year for it.

Pack smart: Throw some fresh fruit in your backpack for an energising snack on the trail. Blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries travel well and give you a natural energy boost without weighing you down.

Take a Scenic Road Trip

Australia is ripe with scenic towns that look as though they’ve been designed just for TV. Wait for the seasonal autumn foliage to come in, and you’ve got picture-perfect photo spots, or locales that are perfect for just walking around and taking it all in. Think Bright in Victoria, Bowral in New South Wales, or the Blackwood River Valley in Western Australia.

Look for a spot not too far from home where you can see a spectacular show of changing colours and set off on a relaxed road trip.

Whether you make a weekend of it or just head out for the day, there’s something so soothing about cruising through autumn landscapes with good company and a solid playlist in the background.

Road trip tip: Pack a cooler with snacks that won’t go off; fresh berries, cut fruit, sandwiches, and plenty of water. It’s cheaper than servo stops and way more delicious.

Get Out in the Garden

Autumn is a brilliant time for gardening. The soil’s still warm from summer but you’re not melting in 35-degree heat while you work. It’s perfect for mulching, planting bulbs for spring, weeding, or sowing veggies that’ll thrive in your climate zone.

If you’ve got kids, get their gumboots ready so they can have in on the action too! They might not be the most efficient help, but they’re outside, learning about nature, and getting their hands dirty.

Autumn planting: Depending on where you are in Australia, autumn’s great for planting strawberries, which will establish roots over winter and fruit in spring.

Plan a Picnic

Gather your mates or family and head to the park for a classic autumn picnic. Pack a basket with delicious snacks; think fresh fruit, dips and crackers, sandwiches, maybe some homemade treats from your weekend baking session.

Throw in a Frisbee, a footy, or Finska for some easy entertainment. Sometimes the simplest activities are the most enjoyable, especially when the weather’s this perfect.

Picnic basket ideas:

  • Fresh berry fruit salad in a sealed container
  • Cheese and crackers
  • Veggie sticks and hummus
  • Homemade berry muffins or slices
  • A thermos of tea or coffee for the adults

Hold a Backyard Scavenger Hunt

Both kids and adults love a good scavenger hunt, and autumn gives you loads of material to work with.

Set one up in your backyard or the local park so everyone gets fresh air and exercise while they’re racing around finding clues. It’s minimal effort for you and maximum fun for all involved.

Autumn scavenger hunt ideas: A red leaf, a yellow leaf, something prickly, three different types of seeds, a feather, something smooth, the biggest leaf they can find. Simple, free, and surprisingly engaging.

Get Baking

As the weather starts cooling down, autumn’s the perfect time to fire up the oven again without heating your house to unbearable levels. Pull out your favourite recipe books or get some inspiration from our recipe collection.

The smell of something delicious wafting through your house, warming up the kitchen? It’s what autumn’s all about.

Autumn baking favourites:

We particularly love adding warming spices to autumn bakes – cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger – they just make everything feel more cosy.

Enjoy the Season

Autumn in Australia is beautiful; the light’s warming, the temperature’s perfect, and everything feels a bit more manageable than the chaos of summer or the cold of winter.

So get outside, try a few of these activities, or just do whatever feels good. Bushwalk, bake, garden, or simply sit in the park with some fresh berries and a good book. There’s no right way to enjoy autumn, the point is just to actually enjoy it.
